Smile, and the world smiles with you

The barista shook his head. “That hedge couldn’t have moved closer overnight. Could it?” Alex asked.

The gardener smiled broadly and shrugged.

Alex nodded. He stared at the spot where he thought the topiary figures had been the day before.

“OK, well. I gotta get in to work. Have a good day,” Alex said. The gardener smiled and waved.

Just as Alex started walking, he heard a loud rustling noise and turned back around. The gardener was clipping the figures, looking as if he were trying to stifle a laugh. Alex gave him a little salute and the gardener smiled and waved back.

As Alex resumed walking he heard the same loud rustling sound. He turned around again to see all six topiary figures waving.

The gardener rocked back on his heels and let out a loud, jolly laugh and Alex couldn’t help but also laugh. He waved again, then turned and walked into work with a beaming smile spread wide across his face.
